The last round of funding had more than a 20% funding success rate. The Science Review Committee, led by Dr. Frank Chisari, includes over 20 highly regarded peers in basic and clinical research and has helped to make many of the pilot study initial applications quite successful on resubmission by providing insightful critique.
The STSI Pilot/Methodological grants consist of awards for approximately $50,000 of direct funds directly relating to clinical and translational research that has the potential to impact the future of medicine.
See below for more details regarding submission criteria.
STSI Criteria for Submission:
The mandate for the STSI pilot grants is to foster translational research. Protocols that include strong clinical collaborations will receive higher scores than those that are predominantly or exclusively lab based. Therefore, a competitive proposal is one that has an integral connection involving biological samples/data provided by a medical clinician coupled with basic science research would be favorably received.
Additional criteria for competitive review:
• Multi‐disciplinary; connecting basic and clinical science
• Likelihood of having an impact on medicine
• Soundness of methodology and statistical considerations
• Track record of the Applicant and the Co‐Investigator(s) selected
• Likelihood of leading to independent funding
Scientifically meritorious projects that feature active basic and clinical science collaboration with a high potential to impact the future of medicine are given the utmost priority.
STSI Application Review Process
The Science Review Committee consisted of 27 senior investigator members of diverse clinical and scientific backgrounds from The Scripps Research Institute and Scripps Health.
Each proposal is assigned to two Science Committee members with expertise in the area and without connection to the proposal under review as a collaborator or clinical/translational liaison.
Each application receives two scores using the NIH scale of 1.0 to 5.0. Typically, submissions with an average rating of 2.00 or better and those with a significant disparity between the two scores are discussed in depth by the Science Review Committee. During the meeting, each committee member assigns a score for each project that fit these criteria. The scores are then aggregated by application to give you the final averaged score. Applications that did not fit the foregoing criteria are not reviewed by the full committee, but still receive scores from the original reviewers as well as comments to assist with resubmission.
For all proposals, including the top rated ones, suggestions are made to help the applicants improve the execution of the funded proposals or to enhance their chances of success upon resubmission of their application.
Any publications, patents, projects, or other tangible outcomes that benefit from STSI resources must credit the CTSA Grant.
