Type 2 diabetes is becoming increasingly prevalent in lower income, diverse communities. Novel disease management approaches are needed to tackle the growing disease burden, and sustainably and cost-effectively improve care.

In an article published in the American Diabetes Association’s Diabetes Care journal, STSI’s Director of Community Engagement, Dr. Athena Philis-Tsimikas and colleagues demonstrate how an SMS-based intervention improves glycemic control in Hispanics with type 2 diabetes. Dr. Philis-Tsimikas leads Dulce Digital, a randomized controlled trial that tests the efficiency of a text messaging intervention over a period of 6 months. The study shows how participants who receive daily motivational, educational and actionable text messages demonstrate greater improvement in glycemic control when compared with participants who do not receive text messages.
