Life Science: What’s Next in Genomics?

Apr 26, 2012

The Science:

Hear from cutting edge scientists about their work in genomics and how their work is making an impact on “What’s Next?”.  Find out why their work has the potential to revolutionize how diseases are diagnosed and treated.

Networking and Career development:

Throughout the entire event, you will be able to network with fellow scientists from industry and academia. Additionally, we will have a career panel in between our two scientific presentations for those interested in learning about what other career options are there for scientists.

Agenda:

4:00pm: Check In and Networking
4:45pm: Opening Remarks and Lead Sponsor Intro
5:00pm: “Making Sense of Human Genomic Variation” Keynote Presentation by Nicholas J. Schork , Professor of Molecular and Experimental Medicine and Director of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics at the Scripps Translational Science Institute.
6:00pm: Career Panel
7:00pm: “Sequencing on a Semiconductor; Ion Torrent” Keynote presentation by Dr. Peter Vander Horn, Senior Director of R&D at Life Technologies

Industry Keynote Speaker:

As Senior Director of Research and Development at Life Technologies, Peter Vander Horn manages Sequencing Biochemistry for the Ion Torrent, Personal Genome Machine. Immediately prior to joining LIFE, Dr. Vander Horn was Chief Operating Officer at Protein Simple, Inc., where he brought an interesting proteomics technology to market. However, he’s spent most of his career developing DNA sequencing and analysis technologies, first at Amersham Life Sciences (GE Healthcare) and later as V.P. of Research, Development, and Engineering at MJ Research, Inc. (Bio-Rad). If you sequence DNA or perform PCR you have probably used a product he helped develop.

Academic Keynote Speaker

Nicholas J. Schork, Ph.D., is Professor, Molecular and Experimental Medicine, at the Scripps Research Institute and Director of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics at the Scripps Translational Science Institute. Dr. Schork’s interests and expertise are in quantitative human genetics and integrated approaches to complex biological and medical problems, especially the design and implementation of methodologies to dissect the determinants of complex traits and diseases.
